Nestled along the sandy shores of Parksville on Vancouver Island, Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort & Conference Centre is one of those places that immediately makes you exhale. Whether you’re chasing a romantic escape, a family getaway, a wellness retreat, or just a reason to slow down, this West Coast resort delivers in ways that feel genuinely special. And not in the overpromised, underdelivered way so many hotels do.

I visited Tigh-Na-Mara for work, but the resort’s atmosphere made it impossible not to feel like a proper vacation. Over my stay I explored the grounds, checked out the accommodation, spent time by the beach, and ate exceptionally well. Here’s my full, honest review. Check availability and current rates here.

Location & Getting There

Tigh-Na-Mara sits right on the Strait of Georgia, just outside the town of Parksville on Vancouver Island. It’s a short drive from Nanaimo  (about 35 minutes,) making it easily accessible from the BC Ferries terminal at Departure Bay. If you’re coming from Vancouver, you can take the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay, then drive north. It’s a scenic, easy trip.

The resort is right on the beach, which is one of the standout features of this part of Vancouver Island. Parksville Beach is known for having some of the warmest ocean water in Canada north of California thanks to the shallow tidal flats, a big deal on the west coast. The views across the Strait of Georgia toward the mainland mountains are genuinely breathtaking. It’s a beauty!

Accommodation: Log Cabin Charm Meets Modern Comfort

One of the most distinctive things about Tigh-Na-Mara is the accommodation style. Forget generic hotel rooms. You can  stay in warm, rustic log cabin-style buildings that lean into the Pacific Northwest setting beautifully. Think exposed log walls, vaulted ceilings, and a cabin-in-the-woods feel that makes you want to stay inside as much as go out and explore. They have cabins that don’t look like anything special from the outside, but are so pretty inside and very spacious. Thewy have stand alone cabins and cabins that can house multiple parties. They have your typical style motel rooms, and suite style rooms. I stayed in a suite style bachelor with a kitchenette. I would recommend. They each have there own spacious balcony, and although these rooms were not right off the ocean trail, it’s only a few minutes of walking to get there.

My room was a comfortable, well-appointed space with a king bed, cozy sitting area with a sofa and dining table, and a full kitchenette — complete with microwave, mini-fridge, coffee maker, and a small stovetop. That kitchenette is a real plus: it means you can pick up groceries and eat in when you want, which helps keep costs manageable if you’re watching your budget.

The resort offers a range of room types, from standard rooms to larger suites and standalone log cabins. If you’re a group or want to splurge, the private cabins tucked into the trees offer serious privacy and a classic BC wilderness feel.

The outdoor BBQ shelter area is a nice bonus. It’s covered, with communal BBQ stations and picnic tables, it’s perfect for families or groups who want to cook out without worrying about the west coast weather. It’s the kind of detail that shows the resort has thought about what guests actually need. Bring the burgers and steaks if you’d like!

Room Highlights:

  •       Authentic log cabin architecture
  •       Fully equipped kitchenettes in some rooms/cabins
  •       Comfortable king beds with quality linens
  •       Spacious layouts with sitting and dining areas
  •       Balconies in many rooms

The Beach & Grounds

Walk out through the resort grounds and you hit the beach in minutes. Tigh-Na-Mara’s beachfront is wide, sandy, and seriously beautiful. Even on an overcast day, the Strait of Georgia views are spectacular. It’s the kind of scenery that makes you put your phone away and just look. I only took it out for a few pictures, I had to show you 🙂

The resort grounds themselves are well-maintained and peaceful. Meandering brick pathways wind between the log buildings, maples blaze red in autumn, and the overall vibe is relaxed and natural.

The Grotto Spa: A Destination in Itself

If you’ve heard of Tigh-Na-Mara, there’s a good chance it was because of the Grotto Spa. It’s consistently rated one of the best destination spas in Canada, and having seen the facility, that reputation is well deserved.

The spa is built around a massive natural cave-inspired indoor pool area, a warm mineral pool surrounded by rock formations and soft lighting. It’s the kind of space that genuinely transports you. Add in steam caves, a salt scrub room, outdoor saunas, and a full treatment menu, and you have a spa experience that goes well beyond a basic hotel wellness center. Every half hour or so, this cascading waterfall comes on.It’s a cute touch.

Even if you’re not a spa person, the Grotto Pool alone is worth budgeting for. Day passes are available for guests, so you don’t have to book a full treatment to access the facilities. I spent a couple hours in the grotto, it was great. We even got charcuterie delivered to an outside table when we were feeling a bit hungry, and it was delicious. I had a facial in the spa and thought it was great, but nothing too memorable. The waiting room at the spa was really inviting, and they had drinks and small snacks to enjoy, typical of most spas. Lounging around in robes and slippers is never a bad thing.

Dining at Tigh-Na-Mara: The Cedars Restaurant

Let’s talk about the food, because it genuinely impressed me. The Cedars Restaurant, the resort’s main dining room, takes a Pacific Northwest farm-to-table approach, and you can taste the care in every dish. The menu rotates seasonally and features local, quality ingredients prepared with real technique. I had the steak one night, and it was very good. I’m picky with my steak, and this one delivered. None of us had a bad or subpar meal here. It was good food, and the service was excellent.

We also had the Tapas while we were there. The tapas is served in the same building as the spa, separate from the main restaurant. We dined in robes. Each dish was executed beautifully and was explained to us thoughtfully. You can tell a lot of care and thought went into it. That being said, while it was pretty good, it didn’t really wow me as much as I thought it would. My favourite dish was the salmon. Perfectly cooked, and I’m a salmon snob haha. The tapas menu does change seasonally, and I would still recommend trying it, especially to those who really value farm to table/seasonal type food.

And again, service was warm and unpretentious, exactly what you want from a resort restaurant. Not stuffy, just genuinely good.

  •       Families. Kitchenettes, BBQ shelters, a sandy beach, and lots of outdoor space make it very family-friendly.

Tips for Visiting Tigh-Na-Mara

  •       Book the Grotto Spa in advance, day passes and treatments fill up, especially on weekends.
  •       Visit in shoulder season (April–June or September–October) for better rates and fewer crowds.
  •       Pick up groceries in Parksville to take advantage of the kitchenette, there’s a Save-On-Foods nearby.
  •       Bring layers. Even in summer, evenings on the Strait can be cool.
  •       Allow time to simply walk the beach, Parksville’s tidal flats at low tide are extraordinary. I really enjoyed just walking along the beach, it was my favourite thing to do.

Final Verdict: Should You Stay at Tigh-Na-Mara?

Yes, without hesitation. Tigh-Na-Mara Resort hits a rare sweet spot: it has genuine character (those log cabin buildings are the real deal), a world-class spa, a beautiful natural setting, and dining that goes well beyond what most resorts attempt. It works for couples and families equally, and with the kitchenette option, it can be budget-stretched without feeling like you’re sacrificing the experience.

Vancouver Island has a lot of beautiful places to stay, but Tigh-Na-Mara has something that’s hard to manufacture: soul. It feels like a place that has been loved for a long time and is run by people who genuinely care about it. That’s the thing that will bring you back.
